Pre-Festival INSTRUCTIONAL CAMPS at El Rancho Mañana Campground on August 7-10, 2008.

BLUEGRASS JAM CAMP WITH MONROE CROSSING

The members of Monroe Crossing, Matt Thompson (mandolin), Art Blackburn (guitar), Lisa Fuglie (fiddle), Mark Anderson (standup bass), and Benji Flaming (banjo) will host a three-day bluegrass instructional camp. This camp is for beginners and intermediate level players and will include individual instrument instruction plus group playing and harmony singing dynamics. This is a great way to start a great festival weekend.

OLD-TIME FIDDLE  CAMP WITH SAMMY LIND

Sammy Lind of The Dirk Powell Band will host two solid days of old time fiddle instruction for intermediate to advanced level fiddle players. He has toured the world playing old time music with his band mates from the Foghorn Stringband, as well as with Dirk Powell and Riley Baugus. A few years back he was involved in collaboration with Irish fiddle great Kevin Burke for a concert series out on the Oregon Coast. Throughout his travels Steve Sammy Lind has had many opportunities to teach old time fiddle workshops at festivals and schools, and greatly enjoys the experience, so much in fact that he gives two workshops a week in his home in Portland when he's not on the road. The fiddle camp will consist of Sammy teaching tunes by ear, breaking them down phrase by phrase, emphasizing bowing. The rhythms of old time fiddling can be very complex, so it is very important to break down tunes phrase by phrase to capture the desired sound. Alternate tunings will also be explored during the sessions. Repertoire will include fiddle tunes from Northern Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Missouri and Southern Illinois. OLD-TIME BANJO CAMP WITH RILEY BAUGUS

Riley Baugus of The Dirk Powell Band will host two solid days of old-time stringband instruction for intermediate to advanced level banjo players. Wednesday August 6th and Thursday August 7th 2008. $80.00 registration fee before June 15, $95 after that date. Class size will be limited to twelve students.
